Keep an Open Mind. International Protocol is more than just a set of rigid formalities, mysterious practices and confusing actions. It is a cluster of shifting, changing, dynamic attitudes and behaviors that when learned and accepted create global kinships.
Maneuvering through this maze of unfamiliar beliefs can be frightening, intimidating, rewarding and downright fun. Expect to be stunned, amazed, humbled and blown away but never boarded.
In 1999 I decided to start the new millennium by doing something I had only dreamed of doing, I went to Africa to study for a year! Armed only with a passport and visa I stepped over my self-doubts, faced my fears and embraced a completely different existence. The experience was phenomenal, and changed my life forever.
When I returned home my greatest desire was to travel and run my mouth. I didn’t know where I wanted to go. I didn’t know what I wanted to say. I did know, I had the “gift of gab”, a longing to see the world and a desire to touch peoples’ lives. My career as a child welfare worker was over; it had left me sad, weary and exhausted. It was time to gather my courage, take up my dream, and create a life that I Loved.
